da betsson： As the American parasites Tom Hicks and George Gillett continue to suck the life out Liverpool the Fleet Street press linking the club’s stars with moves away from Anfield seems to be becoming a constant theme.
The latest player rumoured for the exit door is injury-prone Alberto Aquilani, who has been linked with a cut-price return to Italy’s Serie A with Juventus and Fiorentina reportedly interested. But the player’s representative Franco Zavaglia has laughed off the claims claiming they are nothing but a journalistic dig by the British tabloids at the Premier League underachievers. Are the press looking to pull the club apart bit by bit? Are these rumours going to prove a constant theme?
Zavaglia said:
“A return to Italy? It seems a journalistic shot of the British tabloids.
“I don’t know anything, because Alberto is well in Liverpool.”
He added:
“Aquilani has recovered well from his ankle injury and for this reason I think Liverpool won’t get rid of him.”
The Italian has found it hard to make his mark on Merseyside leading the press to mooting a possible move to the Old Lady Juve to replace Brazilian playmaker Diego, who has struggled to make an impact in Turin this past season.
It has been a dreadful season for the Reds by their standards as they finished in 7th, well outside the Champions League places which they have become accustomed to. The club’s debt has become a major issue and it will not be helped by missing out on UEFA’s flagship tournament as their ownership issue sets to rumble on and on.
The Liverpool fans now have to endure countless stories in the press (the tabloids in particular) of their best players moving on. Fernando Torres has been linked to the likes of Manchester City and newly crowned Premier League champions Chelsea, it does not help that players like Didier Drogba fuelling the rumours by saying that the Spanish hitman would be more than welcome at Stamford Bridge.
Perhaps even more depressing for the Kop faithful is the press stories linking Liverpool talisman and captain Steven Gerrard with a move to either Real Madrid or Inter Milan. Also, manager Rafael Benitez’s departure seems imminent (to Juventus most likely).
Although it seems as though the tabloids jump on Liverpool at every opportunity the fans may have to face up to the fact that their league finish, debt and bad feeling surrounding the club will make it all the more difficult to hold onto these stars.
The much loathed American owners have made it all too easy to have a go at Liverpool as the pair’s antics, greed and off-field problems have crept onto the pitch and have had an effect on team performances, which has made one of the most famous clubs in the world a bit of a joke.
It is set to be a long summer for Liverpool and their fans as they stand to lose a fair few players and manager, with the press having a dig at every possible opportunity and I have a feeling that things will invariably get worse before they get better at the club. It is likely that the club will find it hard next season as Chelsea, Manchester United & Arsenal could pull further away, whilst Tottenham have added the pull of the Champions League which could help them strengthen further and Manchester City will undoubtedly spend as much cash as possible to try make their European dream a reality.
It remains to be seen what will happen at Anfield in future, but it looks as though the Fleet Street journalists will be relentless in both their criticisms and negative rumours surrounding the club, which has taken a drastic step backwards.
